ABOUT US

Welcome to the Queer Family Album corner of the internet,

In a time where hope is hard to find, we have come together to experiment, create and reflect.

We are a trans-disciplinary festival that highlights and feeds itself by collaborative efforts from diverse groups of queer artists.

Our performance series strives to break barriers and imagine utopias for queer futurities by using a performance-based methodology for queer trans-disciplinary storytelling. We ask, what part does queer performance-making play in forging space for alternative discourses?

Collectively, we are thinking a lot about the nuances of queering family and what our individual and common responses are, we are creating a space of collaboration and mentorship, sharing our practices, ideas and methods with autonomy of care. We’ve been shaking it up and creating the space that we dream to create and be within.

This year, our/your Queer Family Album is coming to life and presenting its first volume and we CANNOT WAIT to welcome you there. In July 2024 have embarked on our first creative residency. Where we will define what we are in relationship to each other And while doing that We will make Volumes one and two of the queer family album. And then, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8 and so on……

anonymous, Dylan Spencer-Davidson, KAY Garnellen, Yvonne Sembene, Joy Mariama Smith and  Juliana Piquero unite alongside the initiating artist Katie Lee Dunbar to begin the creative development. We'll dive into contemporary art and meet you at Ballhaus Ost, Berlin in September for Volume 1, featuring KAy Garnellen and Yvonne Sembene.

In 2025, our Queer Family Album reunites again for the second residency and Volume 2, Juliana Piquero, anonymous, Joy Mariama Smith and Dylan Spencer-Davidson will be presenting their collaborative work at Sophiensaele in 2025.

After the first two festival volumes have been presented Queer Family Album will preserve the work and initiate an accessible digital library archiving both Volumes 1 & 2 and for the foreseeable future of all Queer Family Albums to come.

Our live archive will grow and grow and will hold as many people as feel called to be a part of it.

The goal? to continue to share and highlight queer experiences and create a space for a community that disrupts mainstream ideologies.

Follow us throughout the process check out the queer frequency podcast for Queer Family Album where artists and the collaborative team will share their experiences and progress through an exchange of conversations. The Podcast is hosted by Abilaschan Balamuraley in collaboration with Katie Lee Dunbar, with sound editing and the jingle, by Mzngo

Our goal is to make these performance series as accessible as possible- in order to do that we are only presenting our Volumes in venues with accessible landscapes. You can find direct information on the accessibility at Ballhaus Ost here.
